Did You Know?

Did you know that, in addition to gym time and outdoor runs during class time, Dr. A. R. Lord students are also active during recess and lunch? Except on very rainy days, during all breaks, students at Lord are outside - and active!  Our playground and fields are also well-used by students and parents after school on nice days. Physical activity is an important aspect of lifelong health, so get out and move!

Come on by on Thursday from 8:30-9:00, 12:30-1:00 and 3:00-4:00, or Friday from 8:30-9:00 to browse books and school supplies.

Don't forget to put your name in the draw for our door prize: $25 worth of books for the student winner PLUS $25 worth of books for the students' classroom.

The cows are coming!

Have you ever wondered where your milk comes from? The Mobile Dairy Classroom Experience, which provides an interactive and educational overview of the dairy cow, the milking process and the importance of quality milk, is coming to our school on Friday! The Mobile Dairy Classroom is a 12 x 34 foot trailer that has been modified to fit a milking jar, a set of pumps and room to transport two cows and one calf. It’s lots of fun for kids and adults!

Dairy Fun Facts: Have you ever wondered.....

Dairy Fun Facts #7: What do cows do all day?

Cows spend about 10 hours a day eating, 8 hours a day lying down and 6 hours a day on their feet, being milked, walking around their stalls and socializing with their herd mates.

Dairy Fun Fact #6: How much do cows eat and drink per day?

Cows drink about a bathtub full of water and eat about 50 kilograms of food (or 1675 servings of cereal) a day.

Dairy Fun Fact #5: What’s in your milk?

Milk contains water and many other nutrients that help us to have a healthy and well-balanced diet.

Dairy Fun Fact #4: Can cows sweat?

Cows actually don’t sweat!

Dairy Fun Fact #3: Can male cows make milk?

Male cattle are called bulls and they do not produce milk.

Dairy Fun Fact #2: Why do dairy cows produce milk?

As mammals, dairy cows produce milk once they have a baby. The milk serves as food for the young calf, but the mother (also known as the dam) produces too much milk for her calf so we receive the rest.

Dairy Fun Fact #1: How much milk can one cow make?

Here in BC a cow can produce as much as 30 litres of milk a day and almost 9500 litres of milk a year.

Fruit & Vegetable Program

This week the students will receive another delivery from the BC School Fruit & Vegetable Nutritional Program.

MINI CUCUMBERS

  • The cucumber is a creeping vine that roots in the ground and grows up trellises or other supporting frames, wrapping around ribbing with thin, spiraling tendrils.
  • Cucumbers are scientifically classified as fruits because they have an enclosed seed and develop from a flower.
  • Cucumbers are 95% water.

  • For further information, fascinating facts and interesting history on this crunchy vegetable please read the PDF document on CUCUMBERS.

Students will receive their delivery during class time on Wednesday. This snack is not meant to replace the foods students normally eat at school. Students can make their own decisions on whether to taste the vegetables offered.

    Scholastic Book Fair

It's time once again for our school’s annual Scholastic Book Fair.

Participation in the book fair provides a wonderful opportunity to encourage literacy and the pleasure of reading with students. All proceeds from the book fair will be used to purchase new books for our school’s library.

Our Book Fair dates are as follows:

    Tuesday      April 24    8:30-9:00 AM    3:00-4:00 PM
    Wednesday April 25    8:30-9:00 AM    3:00-4:00 PM
    Thursday    April 26    8:30-9:00 AM    3:00-4:00 PM
    Friday         April 27    8:30-9:00 AM

Sales of $1500-$3000 allow the school to take 50% of the total profits to purchase new books. Sales under $1500 allow the school to take 25% of the total profits to purchase new books.

It is our school’s goal to sell at least $1500 in books again this year so that we can take advantage of the 50% return. Please think of the book fair as a great place to buy birthday presents, early Christmas presents, etc. A chart will be posted near the office so everyone can follow our school’s progress.

Please visit the Scholastic web site for information on their Featured Books, Family Guide to Reading, and Reading Levels.
