Parent Presentation at Templeton Secondary

November 24 2016: Templeton Secondary
Building Bridges with your Teen (Communication & adolescent development) 7:00 – 9:00 pm

Building Bridges with your Teen
  • Want to have more fun with your teen or pre-teen?
  • Do you wonder: what is the parent role in high school?
  • Looking for ways to strengthen your connection?
  • Want practical ways to reduce tension & increase understanding?
The teenage years (and high school) bring change for the whole family. We’ll explore brain changes and the science behind teen behaviour. We’ll look at ways to keep your sense of humour and your patience. Hear from others and share your insights and take away some practical approaches to add to your parent toolkit.
Understanding the changes of adolescence can help you support your child throughout the high school years.

Check the schedule for additional free parent workshops being offered in Vancouver.

Outdoor Education

Older students at A.R. Lord recently accompanied younger students on a nature walk at near by Hastings Park. Over 130 species of birds have been spotted in this tranquil urban setting park and is just steps away from the school. It is also the home and habitat to many aquatic species, trees, plants, flowers, insects and small animals.

The excursion included making observations in the park, using binoculars and other tools from the "Outdoor Education Bin". This kit was funded by a grant application prepared in collaboration between A.R. Lord Elementary and Franklin Elementary Teachers and shared between the two schools.

Each Student group collected materials from their trip and carried out further inspection and drawings back in the classroom. The final activity included taking pictures, displaying them on the school smart board screen and discussing as a group.

Save the Date: Winter Concert: Dec 14th

Planning for the year end 2016 Winter Concert is underway and will be held on Wednesday December 14th. The winter concert is a great showcase of singing, dancing and performing by all the students at A.R. Lord Elementary.
Monday December 12th will be the final dress rehearsal.

This year there will be an afternoon concert and a repeat during the evening on December 14th. Due to capacity of the gym, we are encouraging those who would like to have extended families and guests that would like to come to plan on attending the afternoon concert. The afternoon concert has much more available space and we anticipate that the evening concert will have some restrictions on the number of guest per family.

We will also be organizing parent volunteers to help decorate the gym prior to the concert. If you can help please email: drarlordpac@gmail.com or see Tracy. Specific times will be coordinated closer to the date and likely scheduled once during school day and one afternoon after school if needed. Even if you can help for half an hour, it will be much appreciated. More hands make lighter work.

Recycle Art

Grade 3 and 4 Students had the chance to use their imagination and create art projects using recycled materials. They worked cooperatively in groups and transformed bottles, cardboard, paper, and other household/office materials.

Thinking outside of the box and being innovative allows students to create unique pieces of art and is an environmentally friendly way to put to use items that would normally be thrown out.
